Curriculum Outline

Level 1

The purpose of this level is to cover all the Arabic letters, and the correct way of pronouncing them. We will also cover the correct way of pronouncing the different Harakaat (diacritics) of the Arabic language. This is the most important of all levels of Qur’an Tutor Online, as this level helps students avoid making major mistakes while reading the Qur’an. In addition to teaching the correct way of pronouncing letters and Harakaat, some of the common mistakes that one should avoid will be covered.

Topics Covered

  • When should the tongue come out vs. when it should not come out.
  • Heavy and Light letters: the difference in pronouncing them.
  • Harakaat: what is the correct way of pronouncing the Harakaat and what are the common mistakes made
  • Implementing the correct pronunciation of letters and Harakaat in commonly recited Surahs.

Level 2

The purpose of level 2 is to cover some of the rules of reading the Qur’an, that will help our students not only avoid making major mistakes, but also to beautify their recitation of the Qur’an further.

Topics Covered

  • Sukoon – what is it, how to correctly pronounce it, what are the common mistakes that people make while pronouncing Sukoon that should be avoided.
  • Qalqalah – what is it, which letters have it, the types of Qalqalah, how to pronounce it, and common mistakes
  • Huroof Al-Maddiyyah – what they are, how they should be pronounced, and common mistakes made
  • Al-Leen – what is it, how it should be pronounced, what are some wrong ways of pronouncing it and how should to avoid them
  • Shaddah – what is the concept behind Shaddah, the common mistakes that people make while pronouncing it
  • Concept of Ghunnah – its implementation in Noon and Meem Mushaddadah, the “pinch your nose” technique to check your Ghunnah
  • Rules of Meem Saakinah – when to implement Ghunnah and when not to. (This topic will be covered only if time permits.)
  • Implementing these rules in recitation of commonly recited short Surahs from the Qur’an


Level 3

The purpose of level 3 is to cover some of the rules of reading the Qur’an, that will help our students not only avoid making major mistakes, but also to beautify their recitation of the Qur’an further.

Topics Covered

  • Rules of Noon Saakinah and Tanween – what is Tanween, why does it have the same rules as Noon Saakinah, what is its importance in Arabic language, what are the four rules of Noon Saakinah and Tanween and how are they implemented in the recitation of the Qur’an.
  • Stopping at the end of words – how to stop at the end of words, how does the Harakah of the last letter changes
  • Taa’ Marbootah – what is it, how to stop on it, what is its significance in Arabic language
  • Rules of Laam – under what conditions is Laam pronounced heavy or light.

Level 4

The purpose of level 4 is to cover the rules of elongating Madd Letters under certain conditions. By learning and implementing these rules, our students will be able to beautify their recitation further, insha Allah.

Level 5

The purpose of level 5 is to cover the rules of Raa’. Students will learn the different scenarios where Raa’ is pronounced heavy or light. In addition to that, students will also learn the two different types of Laam (Laam Ash-Shamsiyyah and Laam Al-Qamariyyah) and will learn when to pronounce the Laam and when to skip it.

  • Review of heavy letters, what are they, how are they pronounced, what are mistakes to watch out for while pronouncing heavy and light letters
  • Rules of Raa’ – when is Raa’ pronounced heavy and light
  • Types of Laam – Laam Ash-Shamsiyyah and Laam Al-Qamariyyah. When to pronounce the Laam at the beginning of a word.
  • Significance of this Laam.

Level 6

The purpose of level 6 is to cover some of the Arabic rules that are applied during the recitation of the Qur’an. These rules help students determine the letters that are made silent, or are pronounced. Additionally, situations when a letter may be assigned a Harakah that is not necessarily written in the copies of the Mus-haf will be covered.

  • Laam At-Ta’reef – what is it and its significance
  • Types of Laam At-Ta’reef – Laam Ash-Shamsiyyah and Laam Al-Qamariyyah. Which one of these should be pronounced vs. made silent
  • Hamzat Al-Wasl – What is it, when is it pronounced and when is it made silent. When pronounced, what Harakah should be assigned to it, and under what conditions
  • Two Saakins – What happens what two Saakins come together. What happens when a Madd Letter comes before a Saakinah letter.
  • Al-Alif Al-Maqsoorah – what is it and how to pronounce it.
  • At-Ta’awwudh and Al-Basmalah – how to pronounce them combined and separated
