Purpose

The purpose of these classes is to help those who are not able to go to a Qur'an teacher to learn the proper recitation of the Qur’an. And to further improve the skills of those who do have a Qur'an teacher.

Who can benefit

  1. People who are unable to find an expert Qur’an teacher close to their homes
  2. Those who cannot leave the house frequently because of household responsibilities
  3. Those who work full time and cannot find time to go to a Qur’an class
  4. Teachers who help other people learn the Qur’an. This class will heavily focus on listening and detecting commonly made mistakes during the recitation of the Qur’an. This can tremendously help people detect and fix their own mistakes, as well as the mistakes of others reciting to them.

What will be taught

Each session of the Quran Tutor will cover different aspects of reciting the Qur’an properly, in the way it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. The classes begin by teaching the proper pronunciation of Arabic letters and the diacritics of Arabic language (Harakaat). In the advanced levels, we teach the various rules of Tajweed that will help our students beautify their recitation of the Qur'an. In addition to that, some advanced rules of reading the Qur'an are also taught in the higher levels.

Although learning Tajweed can properly be done only with a teacher, this class will help our brothers and sisters recognize their own mistakes, and will give easy and simple tips on how to fix these mistakes. Some of these mistakes can even change the meaning of the Qur’an. We hope that insha Allah this class will prove to be a self-help guide for our students.

Class Structure

Once students register, they will have access to the class website. The class website contains information about how to access the class, different class announcements and a class guide. The class guide primarily serves the purpose of a white board. All the examples and names of rules that the instructor will refer to in each of the lectures are pre-written in the class guide in the form of numbered tables and charts. The instructor then simply refers to these tables and specific examples during the class so students can easily follow along. You can see an example of the class guide by clicking here. This is the class guide for the 2nd week of Level 1 classes.

We understand that online classes could get monotonous at times because no one can see one another. The Qur'an Tutor Online classes are very interactive in nature. During the class, the instructor uses some or all of the following activities/methods, and more if needed:

  1. Direct Instruction (explanation of a concept)
  2. Detecting mistakes (instructor reads certain examples or verses and students have to figure out the mistake(s) (if any) that were made. These are the mistakes that people commonly make when they recite. This activity trains people to be able to listen and detect their own mistakes, as well as the mistakes of others who they may teach)
  3. Short Quiz Questions: The instructor asks students different quiz questions on topics that have been covered that require a short answer. All students are then asked to type in the answer in the chat window so everyone can see and participate.
  4. Recitation of commonly-read Surahs so people can read these Surahs correctly. The instructor will read the Surahs, Ayah by Ayah, and pause after every Ayah/portion so students can recite after him. The instructor will emphasize on the concepts that were learned in class, as well the common mistakes that people may make while reading these Surahs.
  5. Q&A session for students to ask about the concepts that were covered in class.

Pre-requisites

Students who enroll for Level 1 are expected to have the basic reading skills of the Qur'an (Arabic letters, the Harakaat (Fat-hah, Dhammah, Kasrah) etc.). Students should be able to read Arabic words from the Qur'an, even if slowly. Please remember, the Qur'an Tutor Online courses will not teach you how to recognize Arabic letters and Harakaat; they will teach you how to pronounce them correctly and how to implement certain rules of Tajweed in your recitation.

Level 1 is no longer a pre-requisite to take other levels of the Qur'an Tutor Online. Students can enroll in any of the levels during any session.
