Prerequisites

Students who enroll for this course are expected to have the basic reading skills of the Qur'an (Arabic letters, the Harakaat (Fat-hah, Dhammah, Kasrah) etc.). Students should be able to read Arabic words from the Qur'an, even if slowly. Please remember, the course will not teach you how to recognize Arabic letters and Harakaat; it will teach you how to pronounce them correctly and how to implement certain rules of Tajweed in your recitation.

About the instructor

This class will be taught by Haroon Baqai. Haroon Baqai is the Director of the Qur’an Institute and the full-time Hifzh School at Dar-us-Salaam, where 16 students have completed memorizing the entire Qur’an. He has been leading Taraweeh in the U.S. and in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the past 13 years. He memorized the Qur’an at the age of 10, and obtained his Ijazah (license to teach the Qur’an) from Saudi Arabia.

Curriculum

This course will cover the following topics, insha Allah:
  • Correct pronunciation of Arabic letters
  • Heavy and Light letters: the difference in pronouncing them.
  • Harakaat: the correct way of pronouncing the Harakaat and the common mistakes made
  • Implementing the correct pronunciation of letters and Harakaat in commonly recited Surahs.
  • Sukoon – what is it, how to correctly pronounce it, what are the common mistakes that people make while pronouncing Sukoon that should be avoided.
  • Qalqalah – what is it, which letters have it, the types of Qalqalah, how to pronounce it, and common mistakes
  • Huroof Al-Maddiyyah – what they are, how they should be pronounced, and common mistakes made
  • Al-Leen – what is it, how it should be pronounced, what are some wrong ways of pronouncing it and how should to avoid them
  • Shaddah – what is the concept behind Shaddah, the common mistakes that people make while pronouncing it
  • Concept of Ghunnah – its implementation in Noon and Meem Mushaddadah, the “pinch your nose” technique to check your Ghunnah
  • Rules of Meem Saakinah – when to implement Ghunnah and when not to.
  • Implementing these rules in recitation of commonly recited short Surahs from the Qur’an
  • Rules of Noon Saakinah and Tanween – what is Tanween, why does it have the same rules as Noon Saakinah, what is its importance in Arabic language, what are the four rules of Noon Saakinah and Tanween and how are they implemented in the recitation of the Qur’an.
  • Stopping at the end of words – how to stop at the end of words, how does the Harakah of the last letter changes
  • Taa’ Marbootah – what is it, how to stop on it, what is its significance in Arabic language
  • Rules of Laam – under what conditions is Laam pronounced heavy or light.

  • Types of Laam At-Ta’reef – Laam Ash-Shamsiyyah and Laam Al-Qamariyyah. Which one of these should be pronounced vs. made silent
  • Hamzat Al-Wasl – What is it, when is it pronounced and when is it made silent. When pronounced, what Harakah should be assigned to it, and under what conditions
  • Two Saakins – What happens what two Saakins come together. What happens when a Madd Letter comes before a Saakinah letter.
  • Al-Alif Al-Maqsoorah – what is it and how to pronounce it.
  • At-Ta’awwudh and Al-Basmalah – how to pronounce them combined and separated

Course Fee

The course fee is $80.  Those students who register and pay before March 1, 2009, will receive a $10 discount.  Please note, refunds will not be offered to students once they have registered.
